Synopsis on Goodreads

People think of Mother Nature as a gentle lady. They forget that she’s also Death… Sixteen-year-old Poppy Sinclair believes in quantum particles, not tarot cards, in Dawkins, not druids. Last summer, in a boating accident in the Lake District, Poppy had a brush with death. But the girl she finds face down in Scariswater hasn’t been so lucky. As she fights to discover the truth behind what she believes is murder, Poppy is forced to concede that people and things are not always what they seem and, slipping ever deeper into a web of lies, jealousy and heart-stopping danger, she comes to realise – too late – that the one thing that can save her has been right there, all the time.

~

So i’ve had this book on my shelf for years, maybe 4 and i guess i forgot i had the series? but with having about 150-200 books it makes sense. Anyway, i loved this book, it was refreshing to read a book that was a) not too fantasy based and b) in the 3rd person, i needed a break after reading the Red Queen series.

It follows Poppy Sinclair, who attends a Pagan festival with her mum Meg and step-father to be Jonathan who are having a ‘Handfasting’ which is a Pagan wedding ceremony. Poppy isn’t too keen on going, especially since she ‘lost’ her Pagan beliefs but the other option was attending her best friend Michael’s girlfriends 18th, which she’s rather not do since she’s in love with Michael, so the Pagan wedding it is. Which probably turned out to be the worse of the two i guess with a girl Poppy meets on her first day, Beth turning up dead in the bluff after she came to the festival to look for a girl, Maya who she was in love with but she didn’t love her back, and Poppy can relate.  A lot of stuff ensues, like Poppy being the one to find Beth in the lake after a late night stroll hours after talking to her. This awakens something in Poppy and she begins her own investigation into her death after the police believe that it was a tragic accident.  I’ll leave that there as i don’t want to spoil any major plot points

I’m glad that this book has a sequel but honestly this could work as a stand alone novel too, i kinda wish the book was longer too i loved it that much lol
