Synopsis on Goodreads

Summers span decades. Winter can last a lifetime. And the struggle for the Iron Throne has begun.

As Warden of the North, Lord Eddard Stark counts it a curse when King Robert bestows on him the office of the Hand. His honour weighs him down at court where a true man does what he will, not what he must … and a dead enemy is a thing of beauty.

The old gods have no power in the south, Stark’s family is split and there is treachery at court. Worse, the vengeance-mad heir of the deposed Dragon King has grown to maturity in exile in the Free Cities. He claims the Iron Throne.

This isn’t going to be reviewed the same as my last few because it’s way too long a book – Like 800 pages worth – to go through details but i’ll do my best.

While i am reading this series, i am also watching the HBO series – I’m up to series 5 episode 8 i believe – and i am actually quite shocked at how close the 1st season was in portraying the 1st book, obviously there are differences in a lot of things but it’s really close and i actually like that. I can’t count the amount of times i’ve read a book after i’ve watched the movie/tv adaption and had huge disappointments because loads of details were missed.

Another thing i loved about the book was that each chapter was a different character’s perspective but i don’t think this series could have been written any other way….I’m looking forward in a later book to reading Joffrey’s death and who’s perspective it’s going to be under. I’m also hoping to read from other characters views in the later books…such as Cersei, Jaime, Littlefinger etc

While i have enjoyed reading this book, and hopefully will continue enjoying the rest of the series, i do think it will be a one-time read through, just because of the sheer size of each book. I may invest in the graphic novels at a later point to use a re-read material if i want to in the future.
